  4.                                  • Color LaserWriter Service Utility •
  5.  
  6. You must use the Color LaserWriter Service Utility before you replace the DC controller board in the Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS.  
  7.  
  8. The utility creates a file containing the parameter settings stored in the EEPROM on the existing controller board.  You must then replace the controller board and transfer the settings from the file to the EEPROM on the new controller board.

  11. Running the Utility
  12.  
  13. When launched, the application will look to see if a printer is connected to either the Printer or the Modem port.  
  14.  
  15. After successfully connecting to a printer the utility will check for the presence of the Parameters Settings file (in the same directory as the application).  The Write File button will be dimmed.  
  16.  
  17. Click the "Create File" button to copy the current parameter settings to the Parameter Settings File.  
  18.  
  19. Then once the new DC Controller is installed, click the "Write File" button to transfer the previously copied settings back to the printer.

  22. Error Dialogs
  23.  
  24. If it cannot find a printer it will put up the following dialog:
  25.  
  26. "Unable to connect to a Color LaserWriter 12/600 PS.  
  27.  
  28. Please check:
  29. • That the cable is attached to the service connector on the LaserWriter
  30. • That the cable is plugged into a Serial Port on this Macintosh
  31. • That the LaserWriter power switch is on.
  32.  
  33. Note: If using the Printer Port, you must have AppleTalk disabled."

  35. When this happens check:
  36. 1) That you have the cable correctly plugged into the printer.
  37. 2) That the printer is powered on.
  38. 3) That AppleTalk is off if you are using the Printer Port.

  41. Status Line Messages
  42.  
  43. The status line (just above the Create File and Write File buttons) will display messages according to the table below:

  46. No parameter settings file has been created.
  47.

  49. The file does not exist at startup.

  51. Recommended Action
  52. Use the Create File button to make the file.
  53.

  55. A parameter settings file was created at (date) (time).

  58. The file exists or was just created.
  59.  
  60. Recommended Action
  61. If you did not create a file for this printer, quit the program and delete the file "Parameter Settings" before proceeding.

  98. Unlock the disk or copy the utility to a disk that can be written to.

  107. Delete some files or copy the utility to another disk that has space available.

  134. Verify the size of the file it should be about 5 kB.  Try running MTP Emergency to check the directory on your Macintosh.

  137. The parameter settings were successfully  written to the printer, but the file could not be deleted.

  140. The utility could not delete the file after writing the settings to the printer.

  142. Recommended Action
  143. Delete the "Parameter Settings" file manually.

  146. Operating Tips - Workarounds
  147.  
  148. If the Macintosh that you are running this utility on has a modem installed, you must either turn it off or remove it from the system prior to running this utility.
